Letter: Urban sustainability starts with proper recycling practices
The State Journal-Register | October 22, 2021
Monday, Oct. 4, marked World Habitat Day, a special day designated by The United Nations to reflect on the state of urban sustainability. The Illinois Beverage Association believes that urban sustainability starts with proper recycling practices to keep our environment clean and clear from waste, and we’re committed to ensuring our plastic bottles don’t end up in rivers, oceans, or landfills.
Through our Every Bottle Back initiative, the beverage industry has carefully designed our bottles to be 100% recyclable — even the caps. Beverage companies are now beginning to roll out bottles completely made with recycled materials – completely eliminating the use of “new” plastics in packaging. And we are working with experts at the World Wildlife Fund and the Recycling Partnership and Closed Loop Partners to ensure we are making meaningful progress toward our goal of reducing the use of new plastics.
As we continue to celebrate World Habitat Day, the beverage industry is working toward getting all of our plastic bottles back, so they end up in the circular economy, and not our natural environment.
